How does HIV evading the Immune System support the idea of an evolutionary race between pathogens and hosts?
Basically, how do the mechanisms that allow HIV and Mycobacterium Tuberculosis to evade the human immune system support the idea of an evolutionary race between pathogens and their hosts?
There are two factors at work here:
Certain HIV proteins mimic human proteins
HIV mutates rapidly, allowing it to (in a manner of speaking) evolve within a single host.
There’s not much of a race here: the only people who survive past an HIV infection are those who lack the specific target site for HIV. A human couldn’t have designed a more resilient virus. It strikes where it damages your ability to fend off infections, it’s difficult to recognize as a foreign substance because it has a similar form to your own body, and when it is recognized some of it scrapes by and hides within the DNA of functioning cells, able to come back years later with a different identity. The mutation rate cannot be too fast however or the virus would quickly become nonfunctional.
Humans on the other hand don’t evolve very quickly. If HIV put a huge pressure on us (such as by destroying large portions of society) we would probably develop a resistance when people with appropriate immune systems survive. Alternatively we could just evolve to be socially better at quarantine, or to be more sophisticated with medicine.
